Title: 1994 EPRI heat-rate improvement conference. Final report, Volume 1

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:105007

The eighth EPRI Heat-Rate Improvement Conference, in conjunction with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, was held in Baltimore, Maryland on May 3-5,1994. Baltimore Gas & Electric hosted the conference which was attended by 360 representatives from utilities, municipalities, equipment vendors, research facilities, universities, and consulting firms. An organized perspective of state-of-the-art heat-rate improvement programs, techniques, and tools was presented. Mr. George Creel, Senior Vice President of Baltimore Gas & Electric opened the conference with an enlightening keynote address. Mr. Creel emphasized the need to make heat-rate improvement a routine part of the overall effort to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations. The conference presented current work in both traditional heat-rate improvement, as well as research projects which show the most potential for the second half of the 1990`s in the following areas: (1) Overall Unit Heat-Rate Improvement; (2) Cogeneration and District Heating; (3) Boiler and Turbine Equipment Improvements and Retrofits; (4) Testing and Instrumentation Developments; (5) Performance Monitoring Systems; (6) Expert and Diagnostic Systems; and (7) Performance Modeling. The conference highlighted key technical issues and provided a forum for exchange of ideas and information on heat-rate improvement by utilities, manufacturers, and others. A wide range of programs have been designed and implemented to improve heat rates. Experience gained from these programs can be a valuable resource for other`s looking to improve heat rate. Technical advances include improvements in plant cycles and equipment, procedures, performance monitoring and testing methods, testing hardware, and performance analysis and diagnostic software. Selected papers are indexed separately for inclusion in the Energy Science and Technology Database.
