Namibia: Tentative accord reached on Namibian Independence
The territory of Namibia (formerly South West Africa), which has been ruled by the Republic of South Africa for more than seventy yeras, could become politically independent by June 1989, according to a peace plan agreed to in principle by the governments of South Africa, Angola, and Cuba. If the treaty now under negotiation takes effect and a new Namibian government is formed democratically, Namibia`s important uranium mining company, Roessing Uranium Limited (RUL), is likely to become a highly competitive U3O8 supplier in the international market. Until now, RUL`s marketing efforts - particularly in North America and northern Europe - have been substantially hindered by Namibia`s political association with South Africa. RUL produced over nine million pounds of U3O8 in 1987, making Roessing the world`s second largest producing uranium mine and Namibia the fifth largest uranium producing country in the world.
