Basic breakdown study of HPFF and extruded-dielectric cables. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:104511
This report describes a major project to develop a test plan and conduct a large number of tests on representative transmission cable samples, for both high-pressure fluid-filled and extruded-dielectric transmission cables. The theoretical basis for the project goals and the test plan are described. Novel time-saving and cost-reducing approaches were developed and implemented during the test program. Results of more than 60 tests are presented for high-pressure fluid-filled cables, providing information on hot-impulse withstand and voltage-withstand capabilities of new materials and manufacturing systems, and switching-surge vs. impulse capability of impregnated-paper cables. The suggested test program for extruded-dielectric cables is presented, but no samples were tested during this program due to the unavailability of acceptable test equipment and suitable samples. The program described in this report was intended to provide the basic breakdown data. It was not intended to provide a detailed analysis of the results. All test data developed in the program are included in this report, and may be used by the reader to draw his own analysis and conclusions.
