This paper presents a variable frequency design for static var compensator using MOS-controlled thyristors. A three-phase inverter is designed using MC68000 microprocessor. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of this concept. A very simple drive circuit is required to turn-on and turn-off the MCT. No voltage or current transients were observed during the turn-on and turn-off of MCT. The variable frequency SVC can vary the reactive power over a wide range. The reactive power can be changed very quickly due to very small turn-on and turn-off time of MCT. Further research is needed to form a closed loop system and analyze the harmonic currents generated.
