The topic of dismantling Russian nuclear weapons and converting the contained uranium into commercial nuclear fuel has received more media attention than any other issue involving the nuclear industry in recent weeks. On August 31, 1992, President George Bush announced that the US government and the Russian Federation had initialed an agreement for the US purchase of highly-enriched uranium (HEU) from dismantled Russian nuclear weapons. If a final agreement is signed and all of the hurdles to making the HEU available and usable can be overcome, the US DOE could begin supplying some of this material to its customer base by the latter part of this decade.
