The hydrazido-bridged iridium complex Cp*Ir({mu}-C{sub 6}H{sub 4}N-NC{sub 6}H{sub 4})IrCp (1; Cp* = C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}) reacts with H{sub 2} under pressure with oxidation of the N-N bond to give Cp*IrH({mu}-C{sub 6}H{sub 4}N = NC{sub 6}H{sub 4})HIrCp*(3) in its cis and trans forms. In the absence of hydrogen, 3 is coverted back to 1 with reduction of the N=N bond. Complex 3 reacts with CCl{sub 3}Br to give only the cis isomer of Cp*IrBr({mu}-C{sub 6}H{sub 4}N=NC{sub 6}H{sub 4})BrIrCp*(4). Complex 4 is also prepared by reaction of 1 with HBr or Br{sub 2}. 18 refs., 2 figs.
