Title: Digital retrofit improves GT reliability

From a safety standpoint, critical systems in the Heysham 1 AGR include the gas circulators. The eight gas circulator motors of each reactor can be supplied from one 17.7 MW Olympus gas turbine. Four Rolls-Royce Olympus generator sets were therefore installed at each of the AGR stations to provide stand-by power in the event of a reactor trip due to some event in the plant, or a main power failure which would then cause both reactors to be shut down. The gas turbines are fueled with distillate. Operators at Heysham 1 found frequent problems with the original analog fuel system which led to aborted starts on testing. They therefore approached HSDE to supply their Digicon digital governor system as a replacement for the original analog system. Start fuel control and over/under fuel limitation is now scheduled by software within the Digicon governor. This allows for more accurate fuel scheduling and ease of adjustment should it be required. Apart from reliability benefit, Heysham 1 Nuclear Power Station has benefitted from substantial cost benefits. 1 fig.
