Subsea repair of gas pipelines without water flooding. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:10195027

This report summarizes a study for the Pipeline Research Committee of the American Gas Association on the subsea isolation of pipelines without water flooding. A basis for study was defined which considered a typical 300 km gas transportation line with various damage types occurring at either near platform, mid-line or near shore locations. In accordance with the defined basis, the above study requirements have been achieved by the consideration and assessment of: the isolation system types currently used and available for performing subsea isolation; a full review of individual isolation equipment currently available for operational use; a comparison of the durations necessary to perform isolation operations for each isolation system type; a comparison between isolation techniques which are intrusive to the pipeline wall and those which are not; a review of the development work ongoing or planned by equipment vendors and of equipment not currently undergoing development which has potential for mid-line operation; an assessment of the key areas needing development to meet the current demands of subsea isolation. Indications are that with the development of advanced non-intrusive systems, cost saving may be made by reductions in the time necessary to perform the isolation. Further study would be necessary to quantify the potential benefit of such development. It is evident that at least four remotely activated tools are now available and suitable for development to meet all the requirements of mid-line isolation. The study has also confirmed that there is an adequate number of well proven systems suitable for near platform or shore station deployment. It is anticipated that within two to four years there will be several advanced non-intrusive systems available, suitable for the requirements of mid-line isolation identified in this report and which promise the potential for reducing operational costs.
