An in-line ultrasonic viscometer

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:10194622

An in-line nonintrusive viscometer based on ultrasonic technology is described. The viscometer measures both acoustic and shear impedances of the fluid being monitored, from which both density and viscosity of the fluid are derived. The viscometer uses nominal-incidence wedges to transmit ultrasonic waves to the fluid. A simple model calculation is used to estimate the measurement accuracy and resolution. A laboratory prototype was built and tested. Results show that the viscometer can provide an accurate measurement of fluid density and viscosity over a wide viscosity range. Potential application of the viscometer to monitoring of non-Newtonian fluids is discussed.
