Fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) units have become an increasingly popular source for the generation of steam and power, initially for industrial applications but more recently for electric utility generating systems. There are significant differences in unit design between conventional fossil-fired units and FBC units, particularly with respect to water chemistry considerations. Probably the most significant difference is the use of horizontal tubes for evaporative surface within the bubbling beds and external heat exchangers. Such designs can cause steam blanketing and subsequent tube failures. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) authorized a project to establish guidelines for water chemistry in FBC units, in recognition of the fundamental differences in design and operation versus conventional units and the fact that today there are no water chemistry guidelines available specifically formulated for FBC units. This report provides the guidance needed for effective and economical control of corrosion and deposition in FBC units for various designs and water treatments covering a pressure range of 600 to 3,000 psi. Implementation of these Guidelines will help reduce forced outages caused by corrosion-induced failures and thereby increase unit availability. The Guidelines provide a set of target values and action levels for critical sample points throughout the water and steam cycle for drum-type FBC units with phosphate treatment; for drum-type FBC units with all-volatile treatment; and for once-through FBC units. They are applicable to baseload and to cycling and peaking operation. Corrective actions to be taken when the Guideline limits are exceeded are also discussed. More general guidelines are given on layup, representative sampling, continuous instrumentation, data collection and management, and other considerations.
