Grimethorpe high temperature/high-pressure gas filter experimental program. Volume 4, Performance evaluation of the EPRI large-scale hot-gas filter on the Grimethorpe PFBC, final report
- British Coal Corp., Cheltenham (United Kingdom). Coal Research Establishment
A reliable high-temperature, high-pressure, gas-cleanup system is a vital component of pressurized fluidized-bed combustion (PFBC) power generation. This report reviews and summarizes the development, construction, and testing of such a system, a filter module containing an array of 130 porous ceramic elements. The filter, designed to protect the gas turbine from erosion and to meet particulate emission standards, operates with mass flows of up to 4.5 kg/s-equivalent to 7MW(e). It was installed at the Grimethorpe PFBC and tested with both dry pneumatic and water mixture modes of feeding in various combinations with two feedstocks. Outlet dust loading from the filter was always well within the most stringent gas turbine and environmental limits. The test program identified problems with the counterweight method of sealing, the tubesheet, and the pulse cleaning solenoid valves; but the technology appears ready for scale up to large pilot plant scale.
