Advanced physical fine-coal cleaning: Microbubble froth flotation. Final report

The contract objective was construction and operation of a 1 tph proof-of-concept (POC) microbubble flotation module to demonstrate that physical cleaning of coal could achieve: Ash levels below 2 percent, energy recoveries of 80 percent, improved pyritic sulfur reduction beyond that possible with state-of-the-art technology, and moisture content of the products below 30 percent. Bechtel National, Inc. installed the module at EPRI`s Coal Quality Development Center at Homer City, Pennsylvania. The module used a unique design of pneumatic flotation cells supplied by MAN Gutehoffnungshuette of Germany. The module was operated between June and November 1987 using coals from the Pittsburgh No. 8, Illinois No. 6, and Upper Freeport seams. The program started in October 1985 with selection of the coals. The development of a bench-scale test plan followed to characterize the coals, select a flotation reagent package for each coal, and establish test parameters for the POC testing. Coal characterization effort, including petrographic analytical methods, showed a requirement for ultrafine grinding of all coals to enhance mineral liberation, especially that of pyrite.
