Laser powered beam conditioner for free-electron lasers and synchrotrons

Conference ·
OSTI ID:10176267
A new method of using an additional laser for electron beam conditioning in free-electron lasers (FELs) and synchrotrons is proposed. Theoretical analysis and calculations are presented, showing that the axial energy spread of electrons due to their betatron motion in undulators can be dramatically reduced by interacting with a quasi-TEM{sub 10} Gaussian mode optical beam. It is requried that the electrons be prebunched over half an optical cycle in advance.
