Workshop proceedings: Advanced Diagnostics for Substation Equipment
The Workshop on Advanced Diagnostics for Substation Equipment was held at the Conference Center of the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, California on November 9-11, 1992. Its purpose was to review the ongoing work by utilities, manufacturers and research entities in substation electric equipment diagnostics in order to identify, the need and direction for EPRI sponsored research to satisfy urgent utility, diagnostic requirements. Substation equipment in utilities throughout the world is being utilitzed beyond its originally designed life. As utilities downsize their operational and maintenance personnel there is a concurrent need to continue or improve the quality, of electric power service to their customers. Because substations are a vital link in power supply, constant diagnosis of the condition and reliability of the installed electric equipment is now required. The workshop recommended that the following research and development objectives should be carried out: provide guidelines for asset management of substation circuit breakers and transformers, and computer software utilizing artificial intelligence to evaluate equipment test results to guide asset management should be written.
