EPRI urban initiative 1992 workshop proceedings. Part 1, The EPRI community initiative: Final report
- Barakat and Chamberlin, Inc., Oakland, CA (United States)
A recent EPRI workshop identified opportunities for utilities to work with communities in their service areas in addressing local physical infrastructure issues. This report provides motivation for EPRI and EPRI-member utility efforts in this area and summarizes findings of the EPRI Urban Initiative Workshop on topics such as common goals, electricity and the urban environment, electric utility services expansion, urban transportation, and urban power delivery. Investigators researched existing urban redevelopment efforts and identified key players in these activities. They next developed topics for the concurrent workshop sessions. Following the workshop, which was held December 16--17, 1992, in New Orleans, Louisiana, they evaluated the findings and recommendations to determine the appropriate next steps for the project. Because the strategies developed to implement Urban Initiative programs can be applied to rural and suburban areas, the scope of this project was broadened to include all communities. To reflect this shift in scope, the Urban Initiative is now known as the Community Initiative. The workshop resulted in five general recommendations, which call for increasing communications between electric utilities and their communities, developing new and cooperative ventures between electric utilities and their communities, broadening the number of individuals reviewing EPRI`s technology development to include groups outside the electric utility industry, applying tools that balance physical infrastructure needs with environmental considerations, and improving existing technology transfer methods between electric utilities and urban planners.
