Disclosed is a method of producing dense refractory products, comprising: obtaining a quantity of exoergic material in powder form capable of sustaining a combustion synthesis reaction; removing absorbed water vapor therefrom; cold-pressing said material into a formed body; plasma spraying said formed body with a molten exoergic material to form a coat thereon; and igniting said exoergic coated formed body under an inert gas atmosphere and pressure to produce self-sustained combustion synthesis. Also disclosed are products produced by the method; borides, silicides, sulfides, selenides, aluminides, and composites, especially TiB{sub 2}.
