Measurements of the mass and width of the W Boson from CDF
- Lawrence Berkeley Lab., CA (United States)
We have made a preliminary determination of the W boson mass, M{sub W} = 80.38 {plus_minus} 0.23 GeV/c{sup 2} from a combined analysis of W {yields} e{nu} in {bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. The electron data alone yields M{sub W} = 80.47 {plus_minus} 0.15(stat.) {plus_minus} 0.25(syst.) GeV/c{sup 2}, while the muon data gives M{sub W} = 80.29 {plus_minus} 0.20(stat.) {plus_minus} 0.24(syst.) GeV/c{sup 2}. Measuring the ratio {sigma}{sub W}{center_dot}B(W{yields}e{nu}) / {sigma}{sub Z} {yields} e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}, we have extracted a value for the W width, {Gamma}(W) = 2.063 {plus_minus} 0.061(stat.) {plus_minus} 0.060(syst.) GeV and the branching ratio, {Gamma}(W {yields} e{nu})/{Gamma}(W) = 0.1094 {plus_minus} 0.0033(stat.) {plus_minus} 0.0031(syst.). This allows us to set a decay mode independent limit on the top quark mass, M{sub top} > 62 GeV/c{sup 2} at the 95% C.L.
