Application of load duration and Monte Carlo techniques: EPRI monographs on simulation of electric power production
- ed.
As part of a tutorial seminar on probability methods for generation production costing that was held at Ohio University December 7--11, 1987, some lectures were given that emphasized applications. Of these papers, five treated the effect of random outages of generators on production cost and one presented the ``large deviation technique`` for evaluating requirements for reserve generating capacity. The load duration papers used probabilistic production costing based on the equivalent load duration curve, which is also called the Baleriaux-Booth method. The other papers were based on chronological models. Of these, BENCHMARK uses a Monte Carlo technique and POLARIS uses the discrete approximation method where the outage distribution is approximated by purposefully selecting a fixed number of outage states. The applications include evaluation of marginal cost, alternative pricing methods, avoided cost and the impact of unit commitment decisions on pricing. One paper discusses the displacement of low cost generation by required purchases from PURPA Qualifying facilities. Two papers discuss the role and value of hydroelectric pumped storage and compressed-air energy storage plants, and a technique labeled the paired Monte Carlo approach`` is presented. A series of ``acid tests`` were proposed for selecting models appropriate to particular applications. Individual papers are indexed separately.
