Interactions between drops of molten Al-Li alloys and liquid water

Conference ·
OSTI ID:10166736
The goals of this program were to: (a) develop experimental procedures for preparing and delivering drops of molten Al-Li alloys into liquid water; (b) develop procedures and diagnostics for characterizing the interactions; (c) measure the hydrogen generated by the reaction between melt and water; (d) examine the debris recovered after the interaction; and (e) determine changes in the aqueous phase produced by the melt-water chemical reactions. As a major objective of this work, the experiments were performed without triggers applied to the water in order to investigate whether spontaneous initiation of steam explosions occurred with these alloys. The drop sizes and melt temperatures were chosen to simulate melt globules that might form during hypothesized melting of certain Al-Li alloy components of aluminum alloy-fueled nonpower reactors.
