Saturation broadening effects in the resonance ionization spectroscopy of thorium

Conference ·
OSTI ID:10164547
We describe the observation of narrow peaks superimposed on saturation-broadened line profiles in Doppler-free spectra of Th. The peaks were observed using counterpropagating laser beams and resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS). At low laser powers a conventional Lamb dip was observed, while at higher laser powers the dip was obscured by a narrow peak. The narrow peak is attributed to a crossover peak arising from accidental degeneracies between different ac-Stark-split energy levels. 7 refs., 3 figs.
