Three-dimensional finite element simulation of creep deformation in rock salt

A multi-mechanism deformation (M-D) constitutive model for rock salt has been implemented in a finite element code for use in three-dimensional, finite strain simulations of creep closure in deeply-buried salt excavations. Essential details of the numerical implementation are presented. The constitutive model is exercised in a three-dimensional closure simulation of a large underground field experiment. Finally, results from the simulation are compared against actual closure measurements taken from the experiment.
