US DOE is deciding the direction of its environmental restoration and waste management programs at INEL for the next 10 years, particularly for the spent nuclear fuels (SNF). As part of the DOE complex, the Hanford site has a large portion of the nationwide DOE-owned SNF and is a participant in the DOE decision for managing and disposing of the SNF. Efforts include assessing options for stabilizing, transporting, and storing the SNF. Five alternatives are being considered for the Hanford SNF: no action, decentralization, 1992/1993 planning basis, regionalization, and centralization.
