Design studies for the ITER-HARD toroidal field coil

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:10143077
Finite element analysis of the ITER-HARD toroidal field coils reveals that the winding pack components will be stressed beyond their allowable limits by the loads imparted at the end-of-burn phase of operation. Modifications to the HARD design have been shown to improve the stress states developed within the winding pack but indicate that further development of design and materials may be necessary. Preliminary analyses indicate that alternate design concepts may be easier to fabricate and may improve the reliability of the coils.
