Transportation of radioactive material (RAM) in commerce beyond the boundaries of specific plant boundaries falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation (DOT). Regulations for movement of RAM are specified in the Code of Federal Regulations. Requirements for the design of and procedures for obtaining authorization to use specific packagings are contained in 49 CFR 173 and 10 CFR 71. These requirements and procedures do not apply to in plant or onsite moves of RAM which are not under DOT jurisdiction. This paper describes the present approach at the Savannah River Site (SRS) for evaluating, approving and conducting onsite transfers of RAM. Also the application of this process to a new SRS onsite package is described.
