An innovative approach for coupled thermomechanical analysis
This paper describes a staggered step formulation for coupled thermomechanical problems, and the implementation of this approach into a new nonlinear finite element code, PALM2D. The staggered step approach considers the coupled thermomechanical response of solids, including nonlinear effects in both the thermal and mechanical aspects. The thermal problem may include temperature dependent thermal conductivities and convection boundary conditions, and the mechanical problem may include large deformations and strains as well as material nonlinearities such as plasticity. Heat generation due to mechanical plastic deformation is incorporated into the energy equation, and the energy equation is solved on the current deformed geometry. Experience to date indicates that this approach allows an inexpensive solution to many strongly nonlinear fully coupled thermomechanical problems.
