The BGL moving-bed, slagging gasification process has been demonstrated at the 500 t/d scale at British Gas` Westfield Development Center, Scotland. Between 1987 and 1989, EPRI cofunded the testing of the Pittsburgh no. 8 and Illinois no. 6 coals in the 500 t/d plant. The plant produces three major waste-water streams: tar water, oily water, and flash gas condensate. These streams are heavily concentrated with organics and must be treated prior to discharge or reuse. For Pittsburgh coal, the combined wastewater stream make was 27 gpm. The objectives are to collect and characterize wastewaters produced from the gasification of Pittsburgh no. 8 coal in the BGL gasification process; to test whether candidate treatment steps meet effluent discharge goals.
