Title: Development of a real-time monitor for airborne alpha emissions. First quarter report, TTP AL 142003

Abstract

This is the first quarterly report for Fiscal Year (FY) 1994 for TTP AL 142003, Development of a Real-Time Monitor for Airborne Alpha Emissions. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is developing a new technology for on-line, real-time monitoring of incinerator stacks for low levels of airborne alpha activity. While initially developed for incinerators, this new technology may well find other applications in continuous air monitoring, process monitoring, and monitoring during remediation activities. Referred to as the Large-Volume Flow Thru Detector System (LVFTDS), this technology responds directly to the need for fast responding, high sensitivity effluent monitoring systems. With DOE EM-50 funding, LANL has fabricated a bench-top proof of concept detector system and is conducting tests to evaluate its performance. A second- generation prototype is being designed, based on requirements driven by potential field test sites. An industrial partner is being solicited to license the technology. Field trials of a full-scale detector system are planned for FY 95. Accomplishments during the first quarter of FY 94 are chronicled in this report, including budgetary data. A schedule for the remainder of the fiscal year is also provided.

  • Data are presented on the performance of the Victoreen Model 758 alpha continuous air monitor (CAM). The solid state silicon detector installed in the Model 758 alpha CAM was calibrated using {sup 239}Pu filter standards specifically prepared for this study. The calibration of the Model 758's mass flow sensor was checked using a conventional flow meter. Using the alpha CAM, ambient air was sampled overnight inside the ETRC Building at TRA and inside the RWMC Building WMF 602. Dust-laden air was generated inside a glove-box using an aerosolizer and samples of soil from the vicinity of the Rocky Flats Plantmore » and the RWMC. This glove-box air was sampled on several occasions to determine the effect of dust loading on the response of the CAM to natural background radiation. High-mass {sup 239}Pu filter standards were also prepared and analyzed to determine the effect of mass loading on the response of the detector to {sup 239}Pu deposited on a sample collection filter. Two commonly used spectrum analysis techniques -- the three-window method and the Los Alamos four-window method -- were evaluated using alpha spectra collected during samplings of natural ambient air. 9 refs., 39 figs., 42 tabs.« less
  • The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) needed the capability to evaluate the performance of the Eberline Alpha Continuous Air Monitors (CAMs). An additional goal was to characterize and document the Radon background activity at various locations above and below ground at the WIPP. A PC based data collection system was developed to continuously collect information used to evaluate the CAMs` performance and document the operability of the Alpha monitoring program at the WIPP. To accomplish the stated objectives, Westinghouse Radiation Monitoring Systems Engineering modified an existing Eberline CAM supervision and control program to include real time data collection. The papermore » will address the specific hardware requirements for program usage, the functional structure of the program, and the actions required for an operator to generate graphical output. The utilization of the information generated and the future plans for the expansion and networking of the data collection system also be presented.« less
  • Acidic wet deposition (acid rain) is thought to be responsible for a variety of deleterious effects on ecosystems and on natural and man-made materials. Determining and quantitating these effects is complicated by the fact that rain is a low-ionic-strength solution of many different salts and organic compounds. The report describes the features and performance of a monitor that was designed to fractionate a rain event into samples corresponding to 0.3 mm of rain, determine the pH and conductivity of the sample within approximately one minute of collection, and store the remainder of the sample for more-detailed analysis.
