In this work the relative importance of chemical and thermal mechanisms in the ignition and flame kernel growth process is studied using planar laser-induced fluorescence to measure the spatial and temporal evolution of OH concentration and gas temperature within a spark ignited flame kernel. Ignition is achieved using a standard automative ignition system, as well as, a modified version of that system with substantially increased breakdown energy. The experiments are conducted at atmospheric pressure and 300 K in a laminar methane-air flow. 4 refs.
