Synthesis and characterization of iodinated polystyrene

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:10114867

A method to selectively iodinate monodisperse 100,000 molecular weight polystyrene has been developed by performing an electrophilic aromatic substitution on the polymer in which the degree of iodination is limited stoichiometrically. The iodination electrophile used was trifluoroacetyl hypoidite which yielded polymers with up to 1.4 atom % iodine (i.e substitution of a single iodine atom on 20% of the rings) under mild conditions with virtually no degradation in the polydispersity of polystyrene. This report documents the work performed in the areas of synthesis and polymer characterization. 29 figs, 9 refs, 9 tabs.
