The research in this annual report includes five topics each dealing with different aspects of the interwell seismic logging technology for hydrocarbon reservoir characterization. The topics are based on analytical and experimental investigations with emphasis on applied research and development of advanced concepts relevant to measurements and interpretations in heterogeneous hydrocarbon reservoirs. This work is a balanced study of theoretical and numerical modeling of waves transmitted between pairs of reservoir wells combined with experimental data acquisition and processing of measurements at controlled sites as well as in full-scale reservoirs. The five topics included here are: High-resolution interwell seismic tomography using a cylindrical bender source; high-resolution reverse VSP and interwell seismic tomography at the Buckhorn test site in Illinois; interwell seismic transmission and reflection through a dipping low-velocity layer--numerical modeling; data processing and interpretation of interwell seismic data acquired at the Buckhorn test site in Illinois; and an equivalent force system of a volume source in a fluid-filled borehole theory.
