The Office of Defense Programs has the responsibility for safely managing the radioactive nuclear waste generated primarily by the Department of Energy`s defense activities. The Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management was established by the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 to develop and implement a waste disposal system for the United States spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive wastes. The Office of Defense Programs and the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management are sponsoring this publication to keep researchers, policymakers, regulators, and other interested individuals aware of current research in the areas of radioactive waste processing, disposal, transport, and spent-fuel storage.
