Electric Energy Systems: Superconductivity Applications (EES) announces on a bimonthly basis the current worldwide information available on electric power applications of superconductor technology. This publication contains the abstracts of DOE reports, journal articles, conference papers, patents, theses, and monographs added to the Energy Science and Technology Database during the past two months. DOE manages the major Federal superconductivity program for electric power applications. The major thrust has been support of industry, government laboratory, and university teams developing wires made from high-temperature superconductivity materials. Considerable progress has been made by these teams, and US companies are now able to manufacture long lengths (> 100 meters) of wires having good performance characteristics. A new program activity in 1994 is the Superconductivity Partnership Initiative in which DOE provides financial assistance to company teams intending commercialization of a specific superconductive product. These teams typically include an electric utility, a potential product manufacturer, and a superconductive component supplier as well as a National laboratory. Three new projects have been initiated to develop fault current limiters (a protective device for transmission systems), a 100-horsepower motor prototype, and a prototype coil for a 100-MVA generator.
