A survey of the effect of primary coolant pH on Westinghouse PWR plant radiation fields. Final report
- Nuclear Electric plc, Berkeley (United Kingdom). Berkeley Technology Centre
PWR coolants contain lithium hydroxide in order to increase the coolant pH and, therefore, to inhibit corrosion and to minimize deposition of {open_quote}crud{close_quote} on fuel cladding. This, in turn, reduces the production of radioactive corrosion products and reduces dose rates arising from radioactivity deposited on primary circuit components. A detailed survey has been carried out of primary coolant pH at up to 16 Westinghouse PWRs during their first two cycles of operation. Dose rates at plants which have operated the standard coordinated pH{sub 300} 6.9 regime were compared with those which have operated higher pH chemistry regimes. It was concluded that plants which have adopted {open_quote}modified chemistry{close_quote} and {open_quote}elevated lithium{close_quote} regimes have lower dose rates than plants which have operated coordinated pH{sub 300} 6.9 regimes.
