Conclusions from a total system assessment within Kristallin-I
- Nagra, National Cooperative for Disposal of Radioactive Waste, Wettingen (Switzerland)
Kristallin-I is an overview of an extensive regional research program investigating the potential of the crystalline basement in Northern Switzerland as a host rock for a high-level waste repository. The main components of Kristallin-I are a synthesis of a 10 year long geological field program, a performance assessment and an evaluation of strategies for exploration at a more detailed, site-specific level. Major output from the geological synthesis has been a better basic understanding of the geology, tectonics, neotectonics, hydrology and hydrochemistry of Northern Switzerland and explicit quantification of geological parameters needed for safety evaluation. The performance assessment includes a formal scenario analysis, deterministic analysis of a base case and an assessment of uncertainties and altered evolution scenarios. When releases are evaluated as doses, maximum values for expected evolution scenarios are well below safety limits. Performance assessment has allowed the minimum requirements on the geosphere to be specified. The requirements have been examined in the light of available exploration techniques in order to define a field investigation concept for the further stages of characterization of a crystalline site.
