Neutron transmutation as an option for reducing long-lived radiotoxicity of radwaste in a closed nuclear fuel cycle is discussed on a conceptual level. The burning of minor actinides, as well as plutonium, in fast reactors is the presently accessible method. Tc-99 is the only rational candidate for transmutation in thermal neutron systems among fission products.
