The Finnish utilities TVO and IVO are as waste producers responsible for safe management of radioactive wastes generated by their power plant units at Olkiluoto and Loviisa. The strategies of the utilities differ in spent fuel management. IVO returns the spent fuel of Loviisa to Russia. TVO has made preparations for direct disposal of Olkiluoto spent fuel in the Finnish bedrock. The siting and R and D programs aim at starting the construction of a repository after 2010 and at commissioning around 2020. At the end of 1992 TVO submitted to the authorities the reports on the results of the preliminary site investigations at five areas and an updated safety assessment TVO-92.
