Title: Neutron background spectra and signal-to-background ratio for neutron production between 10 and 14 MeV by the reactions /sup 3/H(p,n)/sup 3/He, /sup 1/H(t,n)/sup 3/He, and /sup 2/H(d,n)/sup 3/He

The monochromaticity of a ''single line'' neutron source is of utmost importance whenever secondary neutron yields over a wide energy range must be measured. Among the neutron sources considered, /sup 3/H(p,n)/sup 3/He is best if a suitable beam stop is used; for example, /sup 28/Si or /sup 58/Ni. Tantalum and gold give much larger backgrounds. Neutron emission spectra from the hydrogen gases and from various beam stops have been measured and are given in 1-MeV steps for primary neutron energies between 10 and 14 MeV.
