Title: Analysis of fission-gas behavior with the STARS code: Steady-state irradiation of U-Pu-Zr fuel pins

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/714488· OSTI ID:714488

The STARS code has been extended to model the steady-state fission-gas behavior in a complete fuel pin. Models have been included to treat the development of large pores, including the presence of sodium in the pores and liquid fission products in the sodium. The effects of pin and fuel dimensions, closure of the fuel-cladding gap, and anisotropic axial elongations are included in the modeling. The code has been applied to steady-state irradiation of ternary metallic fuel, and the results of the analyses are compared to experimental data, including axial elongation, gas retained in the fuel, gas in the plenum, and plenum pressure. 6 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.
