The location of chromate activity during the pitting corrosion of aluminum has been studied. Scanning vibrating probe technique monitored the current densities above cathodic and anodic sites and SIMS was used to determine the location of chromium reduction products. Products deposited preferentially on cathodes but chromates dramatically inhibited the anodic pitting processes. 8 refs., 3 figs.
