Title: Annual site environmental report for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant: Calendar Year 1988

This is the fourth annual preoperational Site Environmental Report for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in southeastern New Mexico. The purpose of the WIPP is to provide a research and development facility to demonstrate the safe disposal of transuranic (TRU) wastes generated by the defense activities of the US government. This document is prepared in accordance with the guidance which requires DOE facilities to ''submit an Annual Site Environmental Report to the Office of Operational Safety.''The report provides a comprehensive description of environmental activities at the WIPP during calendar year 1988, including a description of the WTPP project and its mission; a description of the local environment, including demographics; a summary of environmental program information, including an update of the status of environmental permits and compliance activities; a presentation of the data of the Radiological Baseline Program (RBP), which is a program to characterize background radionuclide concentrations in the environment round the WIPP site; and a summary of findings of the Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP), which examines nonradiological impacts of WIPP construction on the surrounding ecosystem. 48 refs., 41 figs., 32 tabs.
