Weld repair of austenitic stainless steels containing helium
Laboratory studies have shown that a weld overlay technique is a potential method for repair of austenitic stainless steel containing helium from irradiation or from implantation by tritium. An interest in helium embrittlement cracking during welding developed as a result of an extensive program to determine the cause of leaks in repair welds in a nuclear reactor tank. Recent studies have demonstrated the suitability of the overlay technique for welding over stress corrosion cracks in nuclear reactor vessels. This paper summarizes results of overlay weld development on helium-bearing material and emphasizes application of the technique over intergranular cracks.
