Changes in mission at Y-12 National Security Complex evolving over the past five years have resulted in increased levels of storage utilization. This has prompted a need to reevaluate storage capacity and efficiency. As a result, Y-12 Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) and Packaging Engineering developed and designed a new modified neutron absorbing container. The high-density storage container is known as the 12-Place Rackable Can Storage Box (12-Place RCSB) and will allow safe and efficient storage of fissile material at the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility (HEUMF).
