Data management: Present state and future trends
- Petrotechnical Open Software Corp., Houston, TX (United States)
The exploration and production sector of the oil industry is going through tremendous change. The uncertainties of oil and gas prices, government intervention, and rising costs are some of the driving forces for change. An industry data model and data access and exchange specifications will facilitate the movement of data and the interoperability of applications when adopted. A ``New Generation`` is emerging as the result of an initiative supported by 80+ oil companies and their vendors. The initiative to develop and maintain the specifications is being accomplished in an ``Open/Collaborative`` manner through a member-sponsored organization, POSC{reg_sign} (Petrotechnical Open Software Corporation). Adopting this ``New Generation`` can support a vision -- By the year 2000, POSC-compliant computing environments will allow business managers, earth scientists, and engineers to get the data they need and applications they want in a timely, economically viable manner without requiring them to be computer experts.
