POSC reaches milestone: Publication of data model. [Petrochemical Open Software Corporation]
Work toward a broadly accessible, unified petroleum data model takes significant strides this month. The focal point of recent developments is Petrotechnical Open Software Corp. (POSC), a nonprofit organization of oil companies, computer companies, and research groups. Five major oil companies founded POSC in 1990 to address the challenge of rapidly developing, unconnected islands of software and data. Since then, POSC has concentrated on developing a software integration platform, a set of standards for vendors, software developers, and users aimed at accommodating the flow of data across company and disciplinary boundaries. The product became available to industry this month with publication by Prentice Hall of a four volume series entitled Software Integration Platform Specifications. The series includes Epicentre Data Model, Data Access and Exchange, Exchange Format, and E and P User Interface Style Guide. This paper describes the software platform and future plans.
