Government moves aim to hike unleaded gasoline
According to EPA, the Agency's suspension of enforcement of the ban on MMT (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl) will allow refiners to produce 340,000 bbl/day more unleaded gasoline without an appreciable increase in crude oil consumption. According to D. Costle (EPA), the buildup of MMT deposits in catalytic converters is not substantial until after 5000 mi of driving and can be reversed by switching to gasoline without MMT. However, continued use of MMT would impose major costs on the automobile industry and the consumer for redesign to meet emission standards. The U.S. Energy Regulatory Administration has announced a series of new price regulations to encourage refiners to increase unleaded gasoline production. These actions and the suspension of the lead phasedown regulations are expected to shift approx. 800,000 bbl/day of gasoline from leaded to unleaded, but to increase total gasoline supply by only approx. 30,000 bbl/day. Details of the new price regulations are discussed.
