Refiners say MMT ((methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl)) is vital for unleaded (gasoline)
According to J.D. Bailie of Ethyl Corp. at an American Petroleum Institute midyear refining meeting (Chic. May 1977), a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study indicated that Rhesus monkeys exposed to 100 ..mu..g/cu m of manganese particulate for 66 weeks and 5000 ..mu..g/cu m for 23 weeks did not suffer brain or neurological damage. Although the auto industry claims that MMT increases hydrocarbon emissions by 100 to 300% and plugs catalytic converters, Ethyl's tests indicate otherwise. In 1981, when the EPA will limit gasoline lead to 0.5 g/gal, a 100,000 bbl/day refinery could save $19,313/day using MMT and need less capital investment. According to a linear programing refinery model developed by H.A. Shearer and T.O. Wagner of Amoco Oil Co., the U.S. petroleum industry can produce 30% of its motor fuel as automotive diesel fuel without major cost increases. Since diesel fuel is 10% heavier than gasoline, mileage comparisons are deceptive, being less favorable to diesel when considered in terms of vehicle miles per barrel of crude consumed.
