Make ethylene and benzene by flash methanolysis of coal

On rapidly reacting methane with coal at short residence times (<10s) at temperatures in the range 825-900 C and pressure of 50-100 lb/in/sup 2/, significant yields of ethylene, BTX, and light oils are formed. There appears to be no net consumption of methane. The process is analagous to the flash hydropyrolysis process for coal, and is termed flash methanolysis. The results of experimental runs under different conditions are given, showing the yield of products. A possible reaction mechanism is postulated. The application of this type of process is discussed and a preliminary economic analysis is attempted.
