Technology developments in chemical coke-oven product recovery. [Giprokoks, UKhIN and VUKhIN research]
The Soviet coking industry now constitutes a highly developed sector of the national economy. Large modern plants equipped to recover all the coke-oven products have replaced the small undertakings operating imperfect techniques and equipment with largely manual labor, making a limited range of products and associated with unsatisfactory working conditions from the health and hygiene viewpoint. The coal chemistry institutes (UKhIN and VUKhIN) setup during the first Five-Year Plan period, faced some urgent tasks. Research was needed, in the laboratories and under commercial conditions in the existing plants, to study the principles of carbonizing processes, determine theoretically and experimentally sound norms for designing the chemical apparatus in the new plants and developing processes that had hitherto never been carried out in Soviet coking plants, such as the recovery of hydrogen sulfide and pyridine bases, the extraction of phenols from effluent and so on. Eventually, as the production capacity of the plants increased, problems arose in connection with process intensification, the improvement of recovery flowsheets in the chemical shops, the control of industrial discharges, the protection of appratus against corrosion and many more. Several specific contributions are described briefly.
