Title: Kharkov coke and chemical works: the base for UKhIN pilot commercial investigation

The Kharkov Works incorporate an experimental equipment shop which studies virtually every process known to the coking industry and tests prototype equipment prior to its commercial introduction. Simultaneous trials are usually in progress on 8 to 9 of the 15 units available. The use of higher proportions of gas coals to extend the supplies of coking coals necessitated developing new charge preparation sytems. Experiments in pilot equipment at various Ukrainian plants led to the recommendation and adoption of the separate coal crushing scheme. UKhIN has used the experimental washery at Kharkov to study and improve the procedures and techniques of coal slurry and fines flotation and the recovery and dewatering of washery tailings. Methods are under development for preparing tailings for other uses within the national economy. Experimental ovens (holding 200 to 300 kg of charge) with various refractory linings are used to study the production of metallurgical coke from plentiful poorly caking coals by carbonization after partial charge briquetting. Over several years, UKhIN staff experimented on various methods of recovering hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide from coke-oven gas to make saleable products. Successful trials on the vacuum-carbonate method of H/sub 2/S removal led to basic design data for the apparatus now used in many coking plants. Designs similarly based on experimental data, led to the commissioning of production shops for pure sodium thiocyanate, used in the manufacture of nitron fiber. In another experimental unit, a process was studied and developed for the production from ammonium thiocyanate of a product novel to the coking industry, viz., hydrogen xanthanate, which is used as a vulcanizing agent and accelerator in the technical rubber industry and in formula for metal corrosion inhibitors.
