The essential characteristic of heavy oils and residues of conventional crudes stems from their containing variable concentrations of high molecular weight molecules, consisting of resins and asphaltenes. This observation bordering on a truism, is always worth recalling when one intends to convert these heavy feedstocks into distillable products. This is because, irrespective of the conversion process considered, it is always the chemical behavior of these heavy compounds, and more specifically that of the asphaltenes, which essentially dictates the characteristics of both the process and the operation, even if these compounds are only involved in very low concentrations. The authors decided to focus attention on liquid phase thermal conversion processes, and particularly on hydrovisbreaking. They shall conclude with an attempt to determine the future of this type of operation, resulting from thermal activation and involving radicals, when it is carried out at elevated temperature (>415{degree}C) in the presence of infinitesimal amounts of soluble catalyst, or in the presence of a solid catalyst specially designed to withstand the coke deposit and to avoid accelerating its formation in these severe operation conditions.
